How to Install the Microsoft Document Image Writer Printer

The Microsoft Office Document Image Writer is a print driver that is included with the Microsoft Office Document Imaging software. When installed, it is detected by the operating system as a printer, but instead of outputting files to paper it saves the documents as TIFF (tagged image file format) or MDI (Microsoft Office Document Imaging Format) files. If the printer does not display under the Devices and Printers section of your operating system Control Panel, you must install the correct software. You can do this using either Microsoft Office 2007 or SharePoint Designer 2007. Microsoft Office Document Imaging is not available for Microsoft Office 2010 or for 64bit versions of Windows 7.

Office 2007

Click the "Start" button and then click "Control Panel."

Click "Uninstall a program" from the Programs section.

Click "Microsoft Office 2007" from the list of installed programs and then click "Change."

Click "Add or Remove Features" and then click "Continue."

Expand "Office Tools" and then click "Microsoft Office Document Imaging." Select "Run From My Computer" from the list of options displayed.

Click "Continue" and wait for the configuration process to complete. Click the "Close" button once the configuration has completed successfully. The Microsoft Document Image Writer will now be listed under Printers and Faxes in the Devices and Printers section of your Control Panel.

SharePoint Designer 2007

Navigate to the Microsoft website (link in Resources) and click the "Download" link for SharePoint Designer.

Wait for the download to complete and then double-click the file to start the set-up process.

Read the Microsoft Software License Terms and then click the checkbox next to "I accept the terms of this agreement."

Click "Continue" and then click the "Customize" button.

Click the "Installation Options" tab and select "Not Available" for the Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer," "Office Shared Features" and "Office Tools" sections.

Expand the "Office Tools" section and select "Run all from My Computer" for the "Microsoft Office Document Imaging" option.

Click "Install" now" and then click "Close" once the installation is complete. The Microsoft Document Image Writer will now be listed under Printers and Faxes in the Devices and Printers.
